Migration of On-Premises Workloads to AWS for a Dental Practice Management Solution Provider

Client Overview

The customer is a software development firm with a long legacy in Dental Practice Management solutions, designed to streamline various administrative and clinical operations including appointment scheduling, patient record management, billing, insurance processing etc. They empower modern dental and specialized practices through intelligent software solutions by reducing administrative burdens, improving operational efficiency and enhancing patient experience.

The customer had their practice management software hosted on-premises, which integrated with software that provides imaging solutions and is hosted on an AWS environment. They wanted to add capabilities for X-rays in their Practice Management Platform with a highly available, reliable and scalable solution to support all 300 locations. For this, they considered transitioning their platform to the cloud.

Business Challenge

  • The customer’s existing on-premises infrastructure faced limitations around high availability, flexibility and scalability. There was substantial manual effort required to accommodate the increase in traffic and this incurred high costs to promptly augment infrastructure resources.

  • Continuing with an on-premises setup would necessitate substantial capital expenditure to acquire new hardware for enabling access to 300 different locations.

  • The customer was experiencing network latency issues, which resulted in poor image quality when accessing rendered images from the rendering software which is hosted on AWS.

Solution Approach

  • Trianz conducted comprehensive planning and discovery, including the review and validation of existing application discovery and assessment reports, encompassing move groups, wave plans, target state design, and target landing zone deployment.

  • A thorough cataloguing and analysis of resource utilization, application dependencies, and performance metrics were performed.

  • The current performance of servers/VMs was monitored to gain a clear understanding of the required cloud resources, enabling appropriate recommendations for size and type.

  • Concierto Migrate provided cost estimates for running workloads on AWS environments and suggested a Rehost migration strategy to the customer.

  • Based on the initial assessment using the Concierto Migrate platform and the migration expert's recommendation, the customer adopted an approach that combined migration and modernization.

  • Migration of workloads from the on-premises environment to the AWS cloud was facilitated using Concierto's robust hyper-automation capabilities.

Business Benefits

  • Achieved infrastructure modernization by leveraging AWS services.

  • Configuration of highly available (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) environments, provided enhanced resiliency.

  • Since the client moved to the cloud environment it improved flexibility and scalability of their IT environment.

  • Automation of server provisioning with pre-installed software reduced new customer onboarding time by approximately 75%.

  • Achieved a reduction in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of approximately 30%.
